This is our third season for Classroom with a View – Lake Clark. In this course, we study Ecology, Outdoor Leadership and PE at home in the fall and spring and then in the summer, we travel to Alaska’s Lake Clark National Park & Preserve for 12 days of fun, hands-on learning. Enrollment is open to students entering grades 9-12. Prior outdoor experience is not required to enroll. This backpacking course is designed for everyone to be successful - even those with no outdoor or hiking experience. The coursework is equivalent to 1/2 credit Ecology, 1/2 credit Outdoor Leadership and 1/2 credit PE.

Field Course Dates
July 6-16 or July 14-24, 2010

Unable to attend the field course? Enroll in our curriculum only option.

As the crow flies, Lake Clark is close to Anchorage, Alaska. However, you can't drive; it's an hour flight west. Therefore, it makes the perfect classroom - a short flight that provides a pristine wilderness.

Eight students led by 2 instructors, will complete this extensive experiential course. Prior to beginning the physical trail hike, as part of their studies, the students will have immersed themselves in coursework we provide. It will give them a foundation in ecology of the sub-arctic tundra, leadership, outdoor and naturalist skills. During the hike, the focus will be applying that knowledge to a mastery level as well as gaining hands-on experiences both on and off the trail to give them a deep meaning of this incredible state.

After completing this trip, students will not only have great memories to take home, but they will have higher self esteem, a wealth of knowledge, leadership experience and new friends. This is an educational experience that will impact them for a lifetime.

From the people on the trip with me, I learned more about looking at people and the world in different dimensions and points of views.
