 About Lake Clark
Four million acre Lake Clark National Park has it all! This living ‘natural history museum’ makes a perfect classroom. There are towering mountains, smoking volcanoes, imposing glaciers, crystalline lakes, tundra and forest. There are caribou, bear, moose, fox, wolves and dall sheep. The center of the park boasts an incredible array of peaks called the Chigmit Mountains. Anywhere else in the world, the Chigmits alone would be reason enough for a national park! In the last ice age, the same glaciers that carved the Chigmits retreated and left a series of jewel-like lakes along the western side of the park.
It has been referred to as 'Denali without the crowds.' Lake Clark National Park and Preserve protects the amazing features of the area such as, active volcanoes, glaciers, wild rivers, waterfalls, glacial lakes, and alpine meadows. The area is special because it has a large diversity of plants, wildlife, and topography in a small area: a microcosm of Alaska. Four of the five biotic communities found in Alaska exist in Lake Clark National Park and Preserve: coastal, lakes/rivers/wetlands, tundra, and forest.
