Our Outdoor Classroom is the Gulf of California, also called the Sea of Cortez.
We will spend our time sea kayaking around an island near La Paz, Baja.  On the island of Espiritu Santo, the focus will be applying prior studies to a mastery level as well as gaining hands-on experiences to give students a deep understanding of this incredible sea and desert. A protected island with calm waters, Isla Espiritu Santo makes a safe destination for our adventure.
In this course, we study Marine Biology, Ecology, Outdoor Leadership and Physical Education at home in the fall and spring and then in April/May, we travel to Mexico's Baja Peninsula for 16 days of hands-on learning that is engaging and fun. Enrollment is open to students entering grades 9-12.  Prior outdoor experience is not required to enroll. The coursework is equivalent to 1/2 credit Marine Biology, 1/2 credit Ecology, 1/2 credit Outdoor Leadership and 1/2 credit Physical Education.

This is our fourth season for Classroom with a View - Baja.   Mindy Lindgren, former IDEA teacher and Classroom with a View founder and Board Chair, used to work as a guide on this island.  Therefore, she knows this is not only a safe place but also an ecologically-rich classroom.

After participating in this course, students will not only have great memories to take home, but they will also have higher self esteem, a better knowledge of the interrelatedness of the world community, a wealth of knowledge and new friends. This is an educational experience that will impact students for a lifetime.

I know I learned more on this trip than I have in any science class ever. Being able to use and experiment with what we learned and see it in action (like the tide changes and the fish in their natural habitat) made it really come alive for me. It helped me remember and reinforce what I had learned in the books.
