Climate Southern Baja has a hot climate in April. Days will be in the 80's & 90's and very sunny. Nights will be milder. Swimsuit, shorts, t-shirt and sandals are what we will mostly live in. The sun is very strong during the day and can burn you rapidly if you don't prepare. Rain is almost unheard of. The cost of the field course will cover all lodging, food, airfare, instruction, travel within Mexico, phone, class materials and first aid kits. However, we recommend bringing some extra spending money for things like souvenirs or items you forgot. Travel We will be flying all together on a group reservation. It is much safer than traveling on individual reservations. Each student will also be able to earn frequent flyer miles. Since we are on a group reservation, we cannot use airline miles to purchase tickets. Student Equipment List Enrolled students will be provided with a detailed gear list. Mar y Aventuras will provide group gear such as tents, kayaks, lifejackets and cook gear. Accommodations Students will be staying in tents for the duration of the kayaking field course. Instructors, boys, and girls will all have separate tents to sleep in. While in Anchorage and the hotel in La Paz, boys and girls will be in separate rooms and will be supervised by the instructors. Food While on the island, our food is prepared by our guides. It is delicioso! It always shows up on the student evaluations as one of the field course highlights. It is usually a great blend of Mexican meals and American meals. SafetyIn addition to the experienced instructors of Classroom with a View, we will have the experience of Mar Y Aventuras (our guiding company supporting our field course) staff. The crew and naturalist of this company have done innumerable field courses in this specific environment. They know very well what precautions to take and since we are their clients, it is in their interest as well to return us safely. This island is ideal because it is only a 40 minute boat ride from La Paz where there is a hospital. Furthermore, the island itself is safe with big, shallow bays that lack dangerous waves, riptides and surf. While kayaking, students will always be required to wear a life jacket. While snorkeling, it will be at the discretion of the instructors. Since the waters are calm and 80 degrees, it is a very safe place for kayaking and does not require any previous skill. Kayaking in calm, protected waters that are 80 degrees allows for a safe experience. Prior to the field course, parents will be asked if they give permission for their child to swim close to shore without a lifejacket. While swimming, students will use the buddy system in which they go in with someone else. Students may only swim when instructors are present. Mar y Aventuras will provide a motorized boat that will be with us at all times. This boat will be used specifically as a safety boat. The boat will be operated by a Mar y Aventuras crew member. If an emergency occurred, we would have the ability to bring someone into La Paz to the hospital.
